Learn and Serve
On Tuesday was my first day at my learn and serve my placement is at Cataract Elementary in a 2nd grade class. When i first got there my teacher Mrs. Johnson introduce me to the class and told them that i will be coming in to help them. The classroom that i work in is a very nice classroom the student desk are in groups and there is a rug area where the can get out of there desk to set and learn. In my classroom there is a smartboard and this microphone thing that the teacher puts on to make her voice louder when there is important information for the students to hear. I am very excited to be in this class this year i can't to see what i will learn.

Entry 3- Chapter 9

First Question: How do public schools define children with gifts and talents?
"The term gifted traditionally has been used to refer to people with intellectual gifts, and we use it here in the same way" (Children pg286). My brother who is 10 years old is condsider to be a gifted student even though i do not live at home during the school year i have seen what my brother public school define him as. His school basically see my brother as a really smart student. He is given higher level work so he could be pushed. I feel as those public school need to define gifted students better because they will eventually not use the gift that they have because they are not being pushed. The ferdeal defination of students who are gifted is " children and youth with outstanding talents perform, or show the potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, ecperience, or environment. these children and youth exhibit high-performance capbility in intellectual, creative, and/or artistic area, possses an unusaul leadership capacity, or excel in specific academic fields. They require services or activities not ordinarily provided by the school. Oustanding talents are present in children and youth from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor" (children pg288). Students that a labled as gifted or talented come from all different types of back rounds. A student maybe gifted in one subject and not so much in another. It is hard to difine a stunden as gifted or not because there are many different views on what being gifted means. Gifted and talented students sometimes are not given a the tools the need to be successful in class.
Second Question: How can we modify curriculum to accommodate the student’s special gifts and talents?
"An imporant question to raise in the education of gifted students- and in all education-is: are the practices we are using benficial, or do they just reprsent esatabilished practice, which through repetition becomes the established way of doing things" (Children pg310)? As a teacher you start getting a routine in the way you teach and you stick with that routine all thourgh your teaching. But sometimes you need to change the way you teach to benfite the needs of your students in your classroom. "Effective education programs support the cognitive and affective needs of all students with gifts" (Children pg310). Teachers need to make so that all students are pushed to learn. With gifted students things come to them easier and if they are not pushed to do more work they will need up giving up on what they can do. "One stragtegy to help gifted students avoid chronic boredom of having to "learn" things they already know is curriculum compacting. The basic prinicple of compacting is that if students already know something and have the basic skills to apply the knowledge, they should be allowed to move on to other areas of learning" (Children pg310). So as a teacher you must modify your curriculum to prevent the student from getting bored and having no motevation to do anything. Curriculum compacting would help the student because it would move the student on to other areas of learning instead of staying with the class. Another way to change your curriculum for your gifted students in your classroom is differentiating curriculum. Differentiating curriculum is composed of three interlated dimensions: 1) emphasizing advanced content knowledge that frames disciplines of study; 2) providing higher order thinking and processing; 3) focusing learing experiences on major issues, themes, and ideas that dfine both real-world applications and theoretical modeling within and across areas of study" (children pg310). This means that as a teacher we need to not alone think of the students in the class who may need extra help but also think of the students who will get the work right away. You need to modify the work for them so they could do the best they can. Another way for teachers to modify for their currculum for gifted students in your classroom is called content sophistication. "Content sophistication challenges students who have gifts to use higher levels of thinking to understand ideas that average students of the same age would find difficult or impossible to comprehend. The objective is to encourage children who have gifts to understand imporant abstraction, scientific laws, or general principles that can be applied in many cicrumstances" (Children pg310). By giving your gifted student challenge work they will be able to push themselves to learn more. The goal of a teacher is to teach student infomation that they do not know and by modifying your currculum you are giving the chance to all your students to learn information that they do not understand. Gifted students just need a extra push by giving the stundent more challenging curriculm it would better the student in the long run.

Entry 2- Chapter 2
First question: If good teaching is going on in the general education classroom, why are special education programs and services necessary?
Yes, there is great teaching going on in classrooms today. Teachers are educating Americas future and its become brighter and brighter with new teaching techniques. But special educational programs and services are needed still. These special services are necessary because every student deserve a fair chance at a education and if there is a student with a disability they need to have the same advantage even if it means they need to receive extra help."The executive branches and the legislatures have the responsibility to create policies, draft laws, and find the necessary money for the special services and extra expenses involved in educating exceptional children"(Children pg38). The government feels as though it is there duty to makes sure that these services for students with disabilities. Some students just need so guidance to make their educational experiences just as good as other students. "Will Sam do better in a school program that recognizes his problems and adapts the program to his needs instead of unfairly expecting him to meet some kind of "normal" standard? Of course" (Children pg36). It would not be fair to except a student with a disability to make it through school with no support at all. There are some amazing teachers in the system but if a student needs help they need all the help and support that they can receive. There are many programs out there to support students with disabilities parents can find information online to find out more services that there child could get.
Second question: How have the courts influenced the development of education services for exceptional children?
"It is the duty of the courts to rule on the interpretation of the laws and regulations generated by the executive and legislative branches" (Children pg65). Courts must make sure that the laws and regulations that are passed are fair for every single child in the Untied States not just exceptional children but every child. The government has a big part in how every student should be educated in America students with disabilities is one of their main forces. "The basic issue here is that children with special needs deserve a free and appropriate public education (FAPE), just as do all children in the United States" (Children pg65). Public education is offered to every single student in America."In this case, the court decide that children with mental retardation did have a right to FAPE and that when the state constitution said "all children are entitled to a free education," the term all did, in fact, refer to all children" (children pg65). All children meaning every single child deserve an education in America. Now every child welcomed to a free public education. "Recently, the attention of courts has turned to the issues of inclusion and least restrictive environment and to what an appropriate programs for exceptional children should be" (children pg66). Being a student that was in a inclusion classroom for must of my schooling i benefited from being in a classroom with students that were more gifted then me. Not only educational but socially i benefited from being in a inclusion classroom. In must special education classroom the majority of the class are boys and girls will have a harder time making friends. It mostly depends on the student and what would be best for them if they would benefited better in a inclusion classroom rather then a special ed classroom then that is what should be done. Inclusion is a very debatable topic these days many people are either for or against inclusion. Must people don't understand the benefits a student would get from being in a inclusion classroom. "Clearly, these rulings reflect the specifics of each individual case and that interpretation of local or district courts. It may take a Supreme Court decision to provide more general guidance on the issue" (Children pg65). Inclusion is base on case to case it is sort of hard for a court to rule that every single school should use inclusion because not every student will benefite from it.

I understand the importance of early intervention and how it will help the student in the long run. Gallagher said that "the earlier you intervene in the developmental sequence of the child, the better in this care better means more substantial results with less effort" (children pg8). This means that the sooner educators find out a child needs help the faster the child could get the help that they need. By finding out earlier that a child needs help the quicker the child's needs well be meet. "Those children who are identified as having disabilities are eligible for special services and special personnel provided funds from the federal and state government" (children pg8). Some student receive IEP's which will set goals for the student and help the reach their highest potential possible. In this article post on Education Week it helps explain why early intervention is good. Early intervention helps increase the importance of the ecological model in many different ways. The ecological model is "in which we see the child with exceptionalities in complex interaction with many environmental forces" (Children pg26). By finding out earlier that a child has a disability it will be easier to integrate the ecology model easier. "The ecological model approach seeks to modify the child's behavior directly by improving the context in which the child lives, learns and plays" (Children pg26). Coming from my family as a student with a learning disability and having a younger sister and brother i have seen how a family respond to a child having a disability. "Families often react strongly (positively or negatively) to the birth of an exceptional child" (children pg16). My parents are both teachers they were very positive when they found out that i had a disability. But some parents are not teachers and may not understand what there child may need. There are many website for parents to turn to get information. Sometimes it is hard for parents to hear that there child has an learning disability or a disability more serious. Both my sister and brother had to grow up with me having ADHD and a learning disability they saw how hard school was for me and other situation that were made more difficult for me. "Obviously the home environment is not the same for a child with disabilities as it is for his or her nondiasbled sibling or for an older daughter as it is for a younger daughter" (children pg22). It's good for children to see what there siblings went through because they will be more accepting of other children who have disabilities. Many parents don't know how to deal with both children in the family if you do some research one will be able to find information. In the long run you are still a family no matter what and no matter if you have a disability or not you will be loved just the same.
